From Carnivore To Raw: When I was about 14 or 15 years old, the school dinners were so foul that my classmates and I decided to say we were vegetarians so we could have the delicious veggie alternative, instead of the minging meat dishes. To back up my argument to the dinner ladies, I looked into the issue of vegetarianism. I found out about the way our farm animals are treated, and how meat rearing destroys the environment. I became a true and passionate vegetarian. Later on, when I was 19, I made friends with a vegan chef. Over a long, hot summer we gorged ourselves on a huge variety of curries and amazing vegan creations, without realising it I slowly slipped into being 100% vegan. The shift from vegetarian to vegan brought me a more satisfying diet, glowing, soft skin, lots of energy and a calm inner happiness I had not had before. Yes, I lapsed from time to time, usually when I had no friends around me who were vegan to share meals and feel solidarity with. However, I always happily found my way back to a 100% vegan diet, and remained that way for the next 12 years. Then, in late 2004, I met someone who talked about people who ate a completely raw diet. Eating only raw foods meant that the diet was totally vegan. I read up on the benefits of a raw diet, looked at some recipes, and saw before and after shots on various websites, I was sold! I read Victoria Boutenko's "12 steps to Raw", which helped with the transition, and I began a 100% raw diet. It was easier than I thought, and had some surprising results. I no longer have energy peaks and troughs; my energy levels are high all the time. I am satisfied with very small amounts of food. My tastes have changed, fruit has become my own special delicacy, and I spend time daydreaming about pineapple instead of chips! I have discovered a whole new way of "cooking", making cream, cheese, pies, cakes, burgers and bread out of completely raw ingredients. I am eating a wider variety of fruit, vegetables, grains and nuts than ever before. I feel completely satisfied; it must be for the first time in my life, because I have never felt this good before. The rest of this page tells you how a vegan diet can end the Western poor health epidemic, and the why by switching to vegan, you can help save our environment, end animal cruelty, and pave the way to end world poverty and starvation. In fact, you will find out that the most you can do to save the planet and yourself, is to switch to a vegan diet, or better still, a raw vegan diet. My main source of information on this page is from two videos I highly recommend: Diet for a new America: your health, your planet, by John Robbins (the vegan son of the Baskin Robbins Ice Cream company founder!), and Eating, with Dr. Caldwell Esslstyn, Dr. Joseph Crowe, Dr. Ruth Heidrich and Dr. Neil Pinckney. We will be stocking these, and the Boutenko's Raw food books in the coming weeks so look out for them. To wet your appetite, just look at how gorgeous and healthy Chris (my American friend) became after switching from a Standard American Diet (SAD) to a vegan diet.
